I run three or four times a week and do one longer ride on the weekend. My knees have been cranky after hard sessions, so I’m thinking about adding a low-impact cardio option at home instead of always heading to the gym in the cold. Space is limited in my apartment, and I have neighbors below, so noise and footprint matter. I started looking at smaller ellipticals, and a 15.5-inch stride model came up as something people use in apartments. What I can’t work out is whether a shorter stride feels choppy for someone around 5’10" and whether it’s genuinely useful for cross-training or just a stepping-stone machine people outgrow. I also don’t want to spend a lot on something I’d only use twice a week. If you’ve trained on a compact elliptical for endurance cross-training, I’d appreciate hearing how it held up and whether the smaller stride bothered you.

At 5’10", I’d be cautious about a 15.5-inch stride for anything beyond short easy sessions. I’m in a second-floor Boston apartment too, and the short stride is what has kept me from committing to a compact model — the motion tends to feel more up-and-down than the longer gliding arc I get at the gym, which is less convincing for weekend-ride-style cross-training. If I were buying, I’d treat it as a twice-a-week easy-day tool rather than a runner replacement, and I’d want to try one in person first. I came across [Best Exercise Bike & Elliptical Trainers of 2026](https://ratethepick.com/category/exercise-bike-and-elliptical-trainers) but haven’t used any of those machines. Anyone here around 5’10" actually logged steady hours on a short-stride model?
