I grew up as a competitive swimmer and trained 10k yards per day 5 days a week from grade school through high school. I could swim laps all day long without stopping if I had to. In college, I hung up the swim trunks and started running and biking for the next 40 plus years until I started getting injuries and soreness. I suffered a sciatic nerve injury last year while walking fast on a high incline. Three years ago I had an aortic valve replacement because I was bi cuspid. I had an echocardiogram last week and all is well with my heart. However, I get winded every two laps in the pool and swim for an hour 7 days a week. I wonder why I cannot swim continuously like I used to. I am able to swim continuously for an hour but stop every two lengths for 10 seconds to catch my breath. I thought it might be related to my valve replacement but the echocardiogram shows I am fine. Can anyone help explain my mystery. I know I am not 18 years old anymore but It seems wierd I have to swim 96 lengths of the 25 yard pool in intervals of 50’s.
