Hilly or Challenging Terrain - Running

Are you an existing Athletica user?
Are you a runner?
Do run run in hilly or challenging terrain or have you done recently?
Did your Garmin GPS struggle in places?

@Andrea and I would like to hear from you, to help us with something we are working on, for Athletica. More specifically we’d like to take a look at your Garmin FIT files from those challenging outings.

Hi I did some hill running at the weekend - happy to share the fit file (here?). GPS didn’t struggle though.

If you send me a DM with your name as registered in Athletica I can hopefully find the fit file. Was it Sat or Sunday or both. Plus in your estimation what was the approximate maximum gradients you ran up and down?

Yes on all accounts. I’ve actually bought a Stryd to help with that and for the treadmill but it’s not here yet.

Can you drop me a DM with your name as registered on Athletica. Plus point me to any particular dates / times you’ve done your hilly / challenging runs.

I did a very hilly trail race today but forgot to restart my watch for some of it. Are you still interested in the data? There is a big pause in the middle. If so, please send a DM and I can attach the .fit file. Also, secretly hoping you can fix it for me due to the missed mileage.

Hi @Phil
I am also happy to help with data as needed. I am just beginning a specificity phase in my training leading up to my first race beginning of June; which will put me more on trails with good topographical changes. My GPS shouldn’t struggle to keep up though, but happy to have you combine through what you are looking for.
DM me if needed.

You’d be surprised at how noisy GPS data is second to second. Even under good conditions . Particularly the reported altitude. I’ll be in touch when I’m ready run tests against your hilly running output.

This is all part of the first evolution we are working on, for running real time workout reserve calc.

Sounds good. If useful when you get to the point your ready I could wear two different Garmin Fenix watch versions during the sessions for two separate datasets of the same session. Lmk :slightly_smiling_face:

One of you may recognise the session profile from one of your runs this month. Currently running the FIT file through the new code (in simulator) for running.

@SoCal1x How hilly would you say your Strength Endurance run on the 10th April was? Would you say there’s a really steep bit for about 80 metres in the last few km? What grade would you estimate?

I’d call it more rolling than hilly. That bit you pointed out includes stairs that rise up from the beach. Also pretty dense in there, so the GPS sometimes drops out (I know this only because the watch will pause…).

Estimated gradient:

Filtered gradient from real time WR. We are more conservative of big gradient spikes and noise from the GPS signal.

Neat! Interested to understand how the WR translates into a gradient…

This route basically banks the descent until near the end.

Not super-steep, though:

It doesn’t but the grade will feed into what’s called grade adjusted pace and that will feed into WR.

Ah! Very cool upgrade to the math.

Dropped you a message

Is that your Sunday Z2 outing and do you have a grade graph like you did before?

Z2-ish until the final climb, that is (gradient trimmed at -30):
