I’m just doing my test week and today is my FTP test. I’m not quite feeling it and in the last 3 months both indoor and outdoor my FTP has been increased through hard riding and zwift racing to 266W(ish) - which I have put in the zones section of my profile.
Is there really much point of me doing the FTP test this week? I would happily replace it with some sort of workout or even an easy ride
If you ever ask it to recalculate the plan (because you’ve changed plan volume etc or something else) always worth ticking box to skip test week. Unless you want tests to turn up the following week.
I began my second race season with Athletica this week, and today was my FTP test day. Unfortunately, I wasn’t mentally focused for the test. I completed the 30-min warm-up, followed by the 30/30 prep. However, five minutes into the 20-minute test, I realized I couldn’t maintain focus and decided to stop.
Prior to joining Athletica, in a situation like this, my coach and I would likely plan to retest another day. I’ve read here on the forum and in Article archives where the Power Profile may be a better gauge than FTP (The Future of Training Load Control: Power Profiling).
Given the circumstances, should I just use my FTP from last season and proceed with the rest of the test week and lean more into the Power Profile test, or would it be better to retake the FTP test?
Hi Joe - to get you started, using a past FTP result is a great place to start as your training will be more or less calibrated from this a first guiding point. This will get adjusted along the way as you note with the blog post you found. We have noted that a 20 min test is ideal for determining your critical power so any time you get excited about doing 20 min all out on the bike you should go for it. Beta users will note they get a notification immediately upon finishing this type of effort.
Best,
Paul
