Introduction to All Female Athlete Category

Hey :star_struck:

Marjaana here again. I realized I should probably introduce myself quickly here.

I’m Marjaana Rakai, a Finnish-Canadian, living in USA, been around the world living in 4 continents, 6 countries :norway: :united_arab_emirates: :brazil: :canada: :finland:. I grew up Cross-Country Skiing and Track & Fielding until an injury made me pivot and I started exploring the world instead of my abilities to develop as an athlete. Like many who dive into sports science, I also carry a chip on my shoulder as a “failed athlete” which led to exploring the science of how to become a really good athlete, specifically in endurance sports. I have an MSc in Sports Science, and consider myself a perpetual learner, which has led to many certifications.

While exploring the world, I met my now-husband, and somehow we were blessed with three extremely active kiddos, all while “expatting” around the world. It’s been a roller coaster ride but I would not have it any other way. At some point during early motherhood, I lost myself, until I was in between a rock and a hard place. Full pivot again, and I re-discovered myself again through sports.

Right now, I am exploring just how good can I get in long-distance triathlon and hopefully one day I will return to my all-time favorite method of excruciatingly painful racing: Nordic skiing.

I am also coaching incredibly busy parents in realm of skiing, running and triathlon as well as strength training. I’m also co-host of Athlete’s Compass Podcast with The Prof and Paul Warloski… check us out if you haven’t already.

I’m very passionate about promoting Women in Sports in various roles and truly enjoy helping others.

My biggest challenge as a female athlete is to figure out how I can organize my life, family life, and training without pushing the envelope too hard. I’ve never been gentle with myself, and tend to push until something breaks.

That’s enough about me. Now it’s your turn! I would love to get to know all our female athletes in Athletica and how we can support you better.

Who are you, and what is the biggest challenge in your life as a female athlete?
