How to best configure Athletica to accommodate 7-day cycling event and Triathlon goals

I use Athletica for triathlon training and have an A race full-distance triathlon in October. I’m really enjoying using Athletica and it’s given me a bunch of personal bests.

This June (so 2 months from now) I am doing a 7-day bike event for charity called AIDS/LifeCycle which I’ve done a couple times. Importantly it is a ride not a race so I’ll spend the vast majority of my time at easy paces on the bike though I may chase the occasional Strava segment or go hard one of the days. Last year when I did the event it was about 32 hours on the bike averaging about 80 miles per day.

What’s the best way to get Athletica to accommodate this?

[Option 1: Current setup] I have the event as a “Cycling All Rounder Single Day Event” with C priority on the start date and another on the end date in addition to my A race in October. With this input Athletica is giving me a plan where 3 weeks out I stop all swimming and running and it just gives me bike workouts. I don’t like this plan since that would mean a full month off of swimming and running.

[Option 2: Alternative] In my mind my ideal training plan would be to not put the event in Athletica and instead follow the training plan for the full-distance triathlon later in the year and over the next 2 months add more long, easy rides on top of the Athletica plan or switch some other workouts to cycling. Last year training for the event I did a similar volume (or less) on the bike to what I’m already doing with the Athletica triathlon plan so I’m not too worried about preparing for it. 1-2 weeks out from the event I’ll taper but continue to train all disciplines. During the event I’ll just bike (and will manually add the activities) and I’ll do a recovery week the week afterwards.

Thoughts on the “Option 2” I proposed?

I’d personally go with option 2 as well. I’d train as normal all the way until 3-4 days out and make sure to do a short taper. I think 1-2 week taper is not needed, and you’ll probably be fine with half a week of easy training. Definitely recovery week afterwards though!

Good luck,
MJ
