Bike HIIT targets seem high

Hi folks,

Couple of queries at the moments. I would guess by feel my ftp is 240w to 250w (garmin says 241) the profile has my cp at 204 which seems low?

The profile has my map at 275 which also seems a bit low. However the HIIT intervals seem to be high 30/30 is at 371w and 20/40 is 721w ?

This evenings short run came over with out any data a bit like the issue last week?

Thanks

Having the same issue with completed sessions not uploading to Athletica today (11/7/2024).

I was also drafting a similar question from yesterdays VO2 20/40 intervals. Session was uploaded to my Garmin head unit and using a smart trainer in ERG mode. I’m in the big chain ring for the front, and the middle for the rear gearing (17). Warming up well, RPMs in the 85-90 range, matching my target power is 133w. When the 20" intervals came about, the trainer increased the resistance. The target power is now 611w (Range of 327-938w). My cadence dropped to the 40’s and I am standing on the pedals doing my best to churn this out. Is this what I should expect? Should I be changing gears?

Thanks,
-Joe

Nope at the cadence it’s a power workout. For HIIT i’d expect to be 90 to 110 rpm.

Pablo_ie thank you for replying back. So for this Short HIIT 20"/40" interval ride. The significantly increased resistance with low cadence is the intent of the session?

I ask because I have done Strength Endurance sessions were the intervals are specificaly prescribed as Low Cadence (40-60). The power range for these was between 175-218w.

The two, to me, appear to have two different cycling specific goals. Thoughts…suggestions…

Sorry for the confusion, i mean the opposite in a hiit session I would expect the cadence to be high.

Hi Folks any thoughts on the high hiit targets?

Hey @Pablo_ie

I will flag @Andrea here - he is your man to answer your questions about the target power HIIT sessions.

Thank you so much @Pablo_ie and @KinesioMS for these messages.

What you are highlighting is that the 20":40" sessions are prescribed at Z7 intensity, which is wrong. I’m so sorry for this, but somewhat the wrong zone entered the template session. We know that those intervals must be done in Z6, which is why, most likely, you did not find them to be effective, or pleasant.

I’m so sorry you had to exert yourselves during these sessions. I will address ASAP, most likely during the WE.

As correctly @Pablo_ie points out, a HIIT VO2 session should be carried out at a relatively high frequency/cadence, i.e. 90-110. Those low cadence sessions have a different physio target in mind (much higher neuromuscular component because of the high torques).

PS, @Pablo_ie , I had a look at the data, and to me there is no evidence to suggest that FTP or CP are wrong. I do not know enough about Garmin to be more specific on the reasons behind these discrepancies. Please be aware that we keep your maximum efforts into account for the calculation of your profile for a maximum of 6 months (which is already pretty long). I do not know what Garmin is doing but perhaps they keep your historical data for longer. As you can tell from your profile (which is quite nice) the critical power nicely lies on your max efforts, settling down at 204 ish. Even If I take the 95% of the max 20’ effort of the last 3 months (FTP estimation), I get 220*0.95=209 W.

Hey @Andrea

Thanks for checking the CP. Are the hiit intervel targets of 371 correct. Previously they would be 286ish.
Thanks

seriously: it’s all wrong with training targets. I just turn to RPE all my workout on athletica.ai. Otherwise, it’s no sense and unreachable Watts most of the times.

Hasn’t been a problem before, I trust the process this just seems off.

@Pablo_ie for the 30":30" intervals your targets are fine and in Z6 as they should be. Somewhat we had the 20":40" seconds intervals (those pulled with the WW) in Z7, which will provide as wrong target. So, it should all be fine for your next 30:30 on Thursday.

@Joe can you please be more specific on what is “all wrong” with the training targets? What modality you are referring to? What metric is off? Bike/run/swim/row and HR/power/speed? Please DM me if you’d like me to have a look at your profile, I might need your use name.

Andrea, Thank you very much for the follow-up. I will be looking forward to the next session on bike. All the best.

@Andrea, my cycling power profile says 275w, which is in line with the 30:30 intervals targets were when I was training a lot more. A target of 371 is close to my AC profile of 432 from a 4dp test. Something ain’t adding up for me !!!

@Andrea @Prof @Marjaana can someone come back to me on this my power profile says MAP is 275 which I would have thought the vo2 max interval targets would be around depending on the duration. Several months ago when I was training a lot more the 30:30 targets were about 280 now they are 371. I haven’t tried to attempt this because it would be a failed session. Is this the right target and if yes why have the change to be 100w higher?

For a while now I’m training unstructured but have a train to maintain plan in the calendar which I’m not meeting the target volumes. The power targets haven’t changed what gives ?

Dear @Pablo_ie, thank you for raising this issue—it’s important that we get it right.

Regarding the 30":30" intervals, the target power seems accurate to me. Your MAP is 275W, and short intervals are typically conducted at 105–120% of MAP. For you, this range would be between 255W and 319W, likely averaging around 287W, which aligns closely with 105% of MAP.

However, I noticed that some sessions (particularly those suggested by the Wizard, such as 40":20") were prescribed with intervals in Z7 rather than Z6, leading to excessively high wattages.

We are actively working on correcting these inaccuracies, and I hope you’ll soon find your target power recommendations more reliable.

Please let me know if this make sense. I appreciate your assistance.

Hey @Andrea
yeah, that’s the thing. As I mentioned, the targets were 371 for the 30:30, which is way too high. As you said, the range should be 105–120% of MAP around 287w.

There was a slight threshold reduction update notification this morning, which I accepted. The 30:30 target went down to 280w. This evening, when I checked again, it was back up to 371.

Something strange going on here can someone check this out the maths don’t compute.

the Short interval 20-10 is a target of 721 watts!!

thanks

@Andrea @Prof

OK so this is putting it in the easiest summary

23/09/24 athletica VO2 - 3 x 9 x 1 30/30 intervals 286 watts fitness level combined 65 bike 40

29/11/24 athletica VO2 - 3 x 9 x 1 23/09/24 athletica VO2 - 3 x 9 x 1 30/30 intervals 286 watts fitness level combined 65 bike 40
29/11/24 athletica VO2 - 3 x 9 x 1 30/30 intervals 371 watts fitness level combined 60 bike 37
fitness level combined 60 bike 37

It’s been like this for a while now, so I’m using sessions from other apps that have realistic targets.

Can someone explain to me why the VO2 - 3 x 9 x 1 30/30 intervals—has increased significantly to 371 watts?

Thanks
Paul

Hi @Pablo_ie,
I’ve been in discussion with Andrea on this. The system is looking back to data at about 6 months ago. It sounds like you’ve substantially detrained over the last few months. Would you say that is possible? If so, we’ll need to manually adjust your thresholds. Would you like me to do that for you?

Yeah, after a big event in July, I have pulled back a lot. I will be starting to train with the athletic plans again soon, so having the targets right is important.

Any idea why the 30:30 was 287 most of the year and the big jump upwards from October onwards, considering I ramped down since July?

Yes, please adjust, or if it’s easier for you, tell me the way to do it.

Many thanks
