Interference effect with multiple training sessions

Hi,
I am on high volume training for rowing. One of the days suggest three sessions: 1 endurance, 1HIIT on the bike and a weights session. Is that really optimal, particularly given the interference effect? If still wanted to do such a day, what order and how much rest between sessions would you recommend?

Hi @lol12321 ,
Our collaborator at HIIT Science, Dr Jackson Fyfe, is the guru in this area. Here is the podcast we did together on this and he has written the chapter on this for us at HIIT Science (Chapter 5). The specific answer to that question is probably: it depends. For a high volume athlete tolerating load its probably okay. Aerobic row, HIIT bike targeting the heart mostly, and then the neuro stim for the weights. If you dive into Dr Fyfe’s work you learn that the interference effect that’s been talked about doesn’t occur at the molecular level, but simply the neuromuscular level. So to your question, so long as one neuro stim doesn’t ruin the other, you’ll be fine. If you feel it is (i.e., no pop to the session), then you’d be wise to shuffle things around. Context over content always, as we say.
