The big training thread

Bit of a wet tempo session today. Saw just one other cyclist out.

Recovery tomorrow and a taper week leading into my first 200km ride of 2024.

On the cycleways back in town.

Longest ride I’ve ever done yesterday. Still working to build up to eventual Ironman distances.

Body is tired. Time change is rough and I’m looking for a nap.

Easy z2 ride today. I updated my constraints, allowing for up to 90 minutes of cycling on the weekend. Athletica responded by making today’s ride 66 minutes. Not a terrible increase!

Rode near the top of z2 power, which is now mid-range HR z2. Legs felt pretty good at the end as well.

@MattS06 Agreed, time change is a pita. I wish we’d all just get on board and leave it.

Not working out today. Between the time change and only 5 hours of sleep last night, I’m feeling ugh. Add in some life stress and I’d rather not though my way through a threshold workout. I’ll reschedule that one to tomorrow or Wednesday. With a HIIT on Thursday. Maybe tomorrow is better so I can have that one day of recovery in between.

I’m cautiously optimistic that I’ve gotten the handle of my tri-bike now and am finally showing serious progress. (it helps when you remember to lube the chain, etc).

Did Zwift for the first time today (free month when I bought my Garmin Tacx 2t) and did enjoy it. My kids sat watching and cheering me on everytime I passed someone.

I do need to mess around with it a bit as what I imported had the wrong wattages, but I’ll figure that out.

Either way, 4x10 at z3a/b and actually was able to increase the wattage on erg above the halfway point for the first time.

Legs are starting to feel the load of the past couple of weeks, but progress is progress and I’ll take it.

Our UK clock change is a week on Sunday. But it’ll be the day after finishing a 386km ride and I’ll be resting anyway  Hope you feel better on Wed.

A very wet strength endurance session, but only one flood to negotiate. I don’t mind rain, it’s easy enough to dress, and stay comfortable in the conditions. Plus I see it as useful mental training for my events.

Jealous of your cheering section!

I felt ā€œokayā€ today. Mental stress is high this week, so I wasn’t sure how this session would go… Better than expected, actually!

First threshold interval my cadence, 90rpm felt too heavy, so I upped it to 100rpm for the remaining intervals and felt much better. The load difference was surprising

S&C today. 3rd session in 2 weeks! It’s like some kind of new record :joy:

Only one small change today. Switched in Mountain Climbers for the planks. At that point my arms were tired and it was pretty challenging!

Good work on that interval set, Jesse. You can see the Workout Reserve reaction to more work, and I would be curious to see how you would have recovered from that effort.

I recovered very well from that one. The next day my was RHR +2 bpm and HRV down a bit but still in normal range. It was also a rest day, so that was nice.

The following Sunday was a z3a workout again, this time 3 intervals which were also in z3b power but z3a HR. I started cautiously and ramped it up when I saw I had headroom:

These are good. You’re clearly getting fit. The WR was at zero so you did well staying comfortable.

I think it’s important to remember that fitness is more than just a number. There are many different ways of celebrating improvement other than a higher FTP/CP or vo2max. I need to remind myself that I’m more than my last power profile.

Aerobic development today. Just an hour which makes for a nice chill circuit. Dry day and mild. Starting to see a few cyclists out in shorts. Rest day tomorrow. Some primers on Sat. Then a nice 212km ride to finish off the week.

How you feel after a session or event is a good indicator of where you are, compared to where you’d like to be.

@Marjaana Congratulations on knowing when and where to lay down your ā€œrace stripesā€. It is hard often knowing when to push and when to call it especially when feeling run down; it takes an experienced Athlete with inner strength to stand down. More often than not it is our nature to put our head down often putting us well behind after the event. Nice work on knowing yourself beyond everything else.

Humidity today was 88% on my run. To say I was dripping sweat would be an understatement. Not looking forward to the return of the heat. Did my endurance run today and felt good. Back half was a bit rough and I heated up but kept it in z2.

Capped off the day with 45 min on Zwift. I’m new to the system and really liking it at the moment. Nice change of pace over watching movies. The real test will be the long ride on sat.

Nopped out of this session. For some reason I just didn’t have the energy in the legs. My thighs felt heavy, stiff and burned far too much compared to expectations. I tried a couple of intervals at a lower power, but it didn’t change anything. 12/28 intervals completed.

Oh well, not my day today. There’s always tomorrow!
