Feature request, running workouts: add warmup option

For aerobic and other run workouts, there is often just a HR (or pace, however you have your own plans set up to decide) for the whole time. E.g. “run for 70 minutes” and a HR range. However there is no warmup built in, so as I’m doing drills and ramping up, my watch keeps beeping warnings that I’m out of compliance with my workout, e.g. my HR is too low or my pace is too slow.

Can we please add ~5 minutes of warmup to our run workouts? I personally like to do things like a-skips, b-skips, c-skips, curtseys, toy soldiers, and a slew of other drills and then ramp my HR up over a few minutes, and would love to have time built in for that w/o my Garmin yelling at me.

(Even better, if you want to add recommended drills in the writeup/plan for these warmups up that we can mix in…)

My Aerobic Development sessions look like this - with warum up and cool down:

Most of mine look like this as well. Slower warmup and cooldown with a main bit of Aerobic work in the middle

@kimberg I love this and we are discussing on how to proceed  what would you like to see on your end?

Interesting that some of you have warmups - I don’t even on a 1.5 hour run. It just jumps into the main set and my watch alarm is going off every minute for being out of compliance :loudspeaker: :hear_no_evil_monkey: :

@Marjaana I’d love to have what they have - WU for 5-10 minutes, CD for 3-5 minutes.
And also would love a list of warmup drills, with links to videos/graphics for those new to the drills - perhaps similar to how our strength workouts are set up:

This is what I’m thinking also. Thanks for the input!

@kimberg as requested, Run Warm-up with drills, mobility and strides. https://youtu.be/mfZNdjOL0k0
This is also available on Velocity and will be on Athletica for higher intensity running workouts

Enjoy, let me know what you think.

Thank you! Looking forward to my next higher-intensity one to check it out and will let you know!

Any thoughts or plan also a ramp up for the lower intensity? E.g. for the endurance, goal HR of 124-148 for example, still takes me 4-5 minutes to warmup my HR to that level while the watch is beeping for out-of-range. LOL. Totally fine if no, just curious.

Yes same with me. It’s takes a while depending on the daily form but it doesn’t bother me.

I’ve mentioned before, but I’ll go the other way and ask for an option to CHOOSE whether you want WU and CD at all for your workouts. I almost never warmup or cool down. I’ve also run with 2-3 run clubs for 20 years and no one ever does a warmup or cooldown either, unless it’s a race. Not saying this is the best method at all, but I’m either ignoring the WU/CD on my workouts or just deleting them and rebuilding the workout from scratch.

I hope many of our athletes will chime in here and tell me to shut up, but I have a feeling that most don’t do any warm up or drills.
This is an inspiration and a tool for anyone who wants to spend some time to improve their form and quality of running:
As a perimenopausal woman, I feel like I’m getting stiffer and less “poppy” every year; and need to spend some time taking care of the chassis and not just the engine.

Maybe I will do a poll…
Warm up and drills or “nah, just go and run”

Maybe I should have said that differently. I do dynamic stretching and sometimes do drills before my runs. However, when I hit “start” on my watch I never begin the running part of my workout at a walking pace or even a low zone 1 trot. It might start out a touch slower, but I’m usually pretty warmed up within the first five minutes. That means FOR ME I’d rather not see a WU Pace step in my Athletica activity because 1) I’m not going to do it anyway and 2) It will screw up my post workout stats by expecting part to be in a zone that I had no intention of running in. On the flip side, I bet it’s probably better physiologically to warm up slower up to a goal pace and then slow to a cooldown at the end of your workout. I just don’t do it and hardly know anyone who does  This is why I mention maybe having the option to have or not have the WU/CD and lets users decide in the settings their preferences.

I’m used to warm up drills and would do them if prescribed. When I had a coach he’d put drills in regularly. I don’t do them much now because I mindlessly follow what is in the workout description. So if they showed up two or three times a week I’d do them.

Gotcha. Can’t let the drills and warm up mess up with data :star_struck::rofl::wink:

This for me exactly LOL. I really WANT to do my A/B/C skips and marches and whatnot, and prefer that time to be included in the workout rather than waiting to start the watch ('cause I’m the type to get busy and forget to start it later), but like you…when the workout says “go” and keeps beeping that my HR is under zone, I often just take off! Lucky to get in a set of lateral shuffles and/or grapevines and call it good. Plus even just taking off, it takes time to get my HR in target zone so I like the warmup time to give that grace. But I see what @mgiven is saying too, options. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
