synchronising-swim-workouts-with-garmin-any-plans
Noted thanks Ricci. I don't believe that Garmin is at the stage yet where this produces a good output for the user, which is why we haven't yet enabled this. Please do correct me if you feel I'm wrong here. The current best solution users are using is that they click on the hamburger icon (upper right corner) and print the workout, putting that print out on a paddle board or other poolside.
Hi Prof, I always build the swim workouts in Garmin's really really buggy workout builder and I simply add the pacing info as a comment for each step. The watch (Forerunner 245) then runs me through the workout in the pool and counts lengths. It would be amazing if you could push swim workouts to the Garmin account just as you push run and bike workouts.
Hi @ben, unfortunately Garmin still hasn't enabled third parties to push workouts to their watches yet. This is a common request from our users and it is frustrating to have to manually build in Garmin Connect or print out the Athletica swim workout, but until Garmin makes it possible, we're not able to do this. My personal solution is to print and put it in a ziplock :-(
@ben that’s right. In case you’re interested in learning more, you can find a <a href=“Why are swim workouts not supported in the API? - Garmin Connect Web - Mobile Apps & Web - Garmin Forums” target=“_blank” re
the last post on that Garmin forum was over two years ago. Actually Garmin can now sync swim workouts. I do it every day from Training Peaks. Here is info
Structured Swim Workouts FAQ
Agree. It is now supported out of Garmin.
I’ve used other training platforms (Humango) and they synced swim workouts.
Btw am trying Athletica because I wasn’t seeing much improvement in Humango.
It would be great if swim workouts can be synchronised with Garmin like the run and bike workouts are. I'm manually inputing them into Garmin Connect for now. Are there any plans to add this feature in the future?
@markbridges Oh, so the Garmin API only allows you to push bike and run - but no swim workouts?
Hi everyone. This feature, the ability to push workouts to your Garmin swim watch, is now live. It takes a bit to get used to but I’m really enjoying mine. Remember to set your pool size in your Athletica settings to make sure the session is pushed correctly to your watch.
This is incredible! Thank you so much!
Hi Prof, would you mind telling us how to use this feature? I can see the workouts getting pushed to my Garmin Connect / Watch, but unlike running/cycling workouts, I cannot see the details of the workout steps so I’m not sure if it’s synced correctly.
Besides that, I do my workouts in two different pools, one being 25m and one 50m. Would this be an issue for the synced workouts?
Hi @anilakarsu ,
Great. If its pushed to GC it should be pushed to your watch. Unfortunately I don’t believe there’s an option from the Garmin side to push to different length pools. We have found this odd but this seems to be the only way they’ve set things up for now so we have to obey by their rules. I would suggest just trying the workout from your watch. If its synced, you should see it there when you go to start your watch. Look forward to hearing your experience.
Is it possible turn off syncing swim sessions only? For certain reasons, I need my sets as drills rather than free strokes so I’m used to creating my own sessions on Garmin Connect. Now I delete the ones coming from Athletica to avoid multiple sessions on my calendar for the same workout but I’d be happy to disable syncing swim sessions altogether.
Hi Prof!
Firstly apologies for the late follow up since my first request. This is great feature add! Thanks!
However, although a step closer, I find it still not useable as a replacement from printing out a workout, since all that it is giving me is a break down of the stage distance in a workout without any notes. Allow me to explain.
eg. here’s todays swim workout in Athletica.

As you can see, for the auto sync’d workout, there is no description for each step and the pace is weird. The rest periods are pretty obvious to detect. So in short it would be amazing for the following to be added to each step, which I’m currently doing manually when replicating my Athletica swim workouts in Garmin Connect. (see attached screenshot).
- Step Type
- Equipment type
- Notes - describing each step, ie. pace
Appreciate you and the team’s effort and speed of iteration.
Loving Athletica, thank you!

I have the same issue, when executing the swim workouts. I like how the app Swim Coach has implemented the workouts. Their workouts are very good explained and easy to follow on the watch. This might give you some inspiration, what would be possible.
Here’s the link to the app, so their won’t be any confusion https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gizmodus.myswimcoach
May I have a reply/acknowledgment to this post?
Thanks
Ricci
Apologies @Ricci. We’re swamped and haven’t been able to address properly. It’s really only me that’s swimming to check into so otherwise I rely on everyone on the forum and this feature was just released this year from Garmin so even they are probably dealing with issues. I really like your suggestion here and I will table this for consideration. Sorry again and thank you for your understanding.
Best,
Paul
Thanks for your reply. I see. If the community can help with any testing just let us know, in the meantime I’ll be more patient.
Not at all @Ricci… sometimes it gets so crazy with pure volume resulting from our success relative to our supporting team — and then things get dropped. In fact that was the case with your important message. By asking for acknowledgement it allowed me to re-read and transfer into one of our dev tickets so its in line to be considered for the future.
Again many thanks.
For everyone reading, remember that you are building the future of Athletica for all and its very much appreciated.
Best,
Paul
